Vietnam assesses its solar potential

Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has published the Solar Radiation and Solar Potential Maps of Vietnam, which provide data on Vietnam’s solar and renewable energy potential. The maps, part of a government plan to develop renewable energy and solar across Vietnam, were developed by a Spanish consortium formed by the Institute for Energy Saving and Diversification (IDEA), Spanish National Centre for Renewable Energies (CENER) and Research Centre on Energy, Environment and Technology (CIEMAT), reports news portal Vietnamnet, citing the Spanish Embassy in Vietnam. Vietnam has had a limited success with solar energy development to date. However, according to a national plan on developing electricity released in 2011, Vietnam aims to increase the share of renewable energies from 3.5% in 2010 to 4.5% in 2020 and 6% in 2030. According to the plan, all communes and 98.6% of rural households nationwide will have access to electricity by 2015. By 2020, most of households in rural areas will have access to electricity. © PHOTON
